 Ten Popular Feng Shui Myths
By: Time & Space: The Feng Shui Newsletter

  1. The Number 4 is unlucky. This is not true, but people think that if their address has the number 4 in it that this alone constitutes an unlucky house. In Chinese, the word for the number 4 sounds almost the same as their word for "death." It is a cultural association that has NOTHING to do with real energy.

2. A red door is lucky. Once again, this feng shui myth is based on a cultural association with the color red being a symbol of happiness, fertility and prosperity. The Chinese bride wears a red dress. But this does not mean that red doors attract positive energies. It is a superstition that has been perpetuated by both Western and Asian feng shui novices.

3. Keep your toilet lid closed so that you don't lose your wealth luck. This myth was created about 25 years ago by the New Age version of feng shui, which is not respected at all by authentic classical feng shui masters.

4. Images of fish or frogs will bring prosperity. These are cultural symbols which are not considered high caliber feng shui remedies. The origin of the fish or frog superstition probably has something to do with the fact that these are water bound creatures and water can in fact bring prosperity when it is placed correctly.

5. Hanging windchimes is lucky. A metal wind chime is considered a "moving metal" remedy, like a grandfather clock. But when it is not appropriate to use metal, this remedy may actually cause harm or even attract a ghost.

6. Hanging crystals is lucky. This is another myth created by the New Age version of feng shui. Crystals were never used as feng shui remedies. One of the greatest living feng shui masters, Master Sang, said "I never heard of these crystals until I came to America."

7. Dried flowers bring death. This is also not true and a dried flower arrangement is no "deader" than wood furniture. Pure pyschobabble.

8. Antiques or pre-owned objects are unlucky. Inanimate objects can retain energy, including an auric imprint of the previous owner. This can go either way. Sometimes the antique can possess positive energies, sometimes not.

9. Photos or paintings of a solitary person will sabotage a woman's chance of being in a romantic relationship. This is more New Age nonsense. Art is always subjective and you should not be afraid to display artistic images of one person.

10. A good feng shui house is clutter-free. Some people think that good feng shui is synonomous with a clean, tidy house. This does not have a lot to do with a real understanding of the unseen energies. In fact, you can have a house that is a little messy and it might still have excellent energy. Sometimes very creative and spiritual people have messy homes. No need to be fanatic.
